Safar

Ṣafar  ( Arabic :  صفر ‎) is the second month of the lunar based  Islamic calendar . The Arabic word  ṣafar  means "empty", corresponding to the  pre-Islamic Arabian  time period when people’s houses were empty, as they were out gathering food.  Ṣafar  also means "whistling of the wind", as this was likely a windy time of year. Most of the Islamic months are named according to weather conditions of the time; however, since the calendar is lunar, the months shift about 11 days every year, meaning that the seasons do not necessarily correspond to the name of the month. According to an account by  Rasheed Turabi , on the first day of  Safar , [72]  they arrived in Damascus and the captured family and heads of the dead were taken to Yazid. [73]  Yazid asked the identity of each dead person and then noticed a woman with a defiant demeanour and asked, "Who is this arrogant woman?" The woman approached him and retorted: "Why ...

10 Muharram: Referred to as the Day of Ashurah (lit. "the Tenth"), the day on which Husayn ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. Shia Muslims spend the day in mourning, while Sunni Muslims fast on this day, commemorating the rescue of the  people of Israel  by Musa (Moses) from  Pharaoh . Some Sunni Muslims also mourn for the martyrs of Karbala. [7]  Many  Sufi  Muslims fast for the same reason as the Sunnis mentioned above, but also for the martyred dead in Karbala. ***** The Battle of Karbalāʾ , (October 10, 680 [10th of Muharram,  AH  61]), was a brief military engagement in which a small party led by al-Husayn ibn 'Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and son of ʿAlī, the fourth caliph, was defeated and massacred by an army sent by the Umayyad caliph Yazid I. The battle helped secure the position of the Umayyad dynasty, but among Shi'ite Muslims (followers of al-Ḥusayn) the 10th of Muhar...
