  • 630 - Conquest of Mecca: The Prophet Muhammad and his followers conquered Mecca.  The Quraysh surrendered.

The conquest of Mecca was the capturing of the town of Mecca by Muslims led by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The conquest marked the end of the wars between the followers of Muhammad and the Quraysh tribe.

  • 1946 - Enver Hoxha, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Albania, declared the People's Republic of Albania with himself as head of state.
  • 1972 - East Pakistan renamed itself Bangladesh.
  • 1998 - Over 100 people were killed in the Sidi-Hamed massacre in Algeria. 
  • 2013 - One French soldier and 17 militants were killed in a failed attempt to free a French hostage in Bulo Marer, Somalia.
