  • 1926- Abdul-Aziz ibn Saud was crowned King of Hejaz. 

Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman bin Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Saud ('Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd ar Raḥman bin Fayṣal bin Turki bin 'Abd Allah bin Muḥammad Al Sa'ud) (b. January 15, 1875 – d. November 9, 1953), known in the West as Ibn Saud, was the first monarch and founder of Saudi Arabia,  the "third Saudi state".  He was ruler of the whole Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from September 23, 1932 to November 9, 1953 but ruled parts of it as early as 1902.


Ibn Saud reconquered his family's ancestral home city of Riyadh in 1902, starting three decades of conquests that made him the ruler of nearly all of central and north Arabia. He consolidated his control over the Najd in 1922, then conquered the Hejaz in 1925. He extended his dominions into what later became the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. As King, he presided over the discovery of petroleum in Saudi Arabia in 1938 and the beginning of large-scale oil production after World War II. He fathered many children, including 45 sons, and all of the subsequent kings of Saudi Arabia. 


  • 1936 - The Kashf-e hijab decree was made and was immediately enforced by Reza Shah, Iran's head of state, banning the wearing of Islamic veils in public.
  • 1961 - In France, a referendum supported Charles de Gaulle's policies in Algeria. 
  • 1972 - Bowing to international pressure, President of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto released Bengali leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from prison, who had been arrested after declaring the independence of Bangladesh.  
  • 2003 - Turkish Airlines Flight 634 crashed near Diyarbakir Airport, Turkey, killing the entire crew and 70 of the 75 passengers.
  • 2020 - Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 crashed immediately after takeoff at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport.  All 178 on board were killed.  The plane was shot down by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile.

Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil Al-Qubrusi Al-Haqqani (b. Mehmet Nazım Adil; April 21, 1922 – d. May 7, 2014) (Turkish: Seyh Muhammed Nazım Adil El-Kıbrısi Hakkani), commonly known as Shaykh Nazim (Turkish: Seyh Nazım), was a Turkish Cypriot Sunni Muslim imam and one of the most influential members of the Haqqani stream of the Naqshbandi order (tariqa) of Sunni Islam.
