- 1509 - The Portuguese navy defeated a joint fleet of the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Venice, the Sultan of Gujarat, the Mamluk Burji Sultanate of Egypt, the Zamorin of Calicut, and the Republic of Ragusa at the Battle of Diu in Diu, India.
- 1661 - Maratha forces under Chattrapati Shivaji defeated the Mughals in the Battle of Umberkhind.
- 1830 - The London Protocol of 1830 established the full independence and sovereignty of Greec from the Ottoman Empire as the final result of the Greek War of Independence.
- 1972 - The first day of the seven-day 1972 Iran blizzard, which killed at least 4,000 people, making it the deadliest snowstorm in history.

Umm Kulthum (b. Faṭima Ibrahim es-Sayyid el-Beltagi on December 31, 1898, Tamay Ez-Zahayra, El Senbellawein, El Dakahlia, Khedivate of Egypt - d. February 3, 1975, Cairo, Egypt) was an Egyptian singer, songwriter, and film actress active from the 1920s to the 1970s. She was given the honorific title Kawkab al-Sharq ('Star of the East').
Umm Kulthum was known for her vocal ability and unique style. She sold over 80 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling Middle Eastern singers of all time. She is considered a national icon in her native Egypt where she has been dubbed "The Voice of Egypt" and "Egypt's fourth pyramid".
