  January 12 Events 1964 – Rebels in Zanzibar began a revolt known as the Zanzibar Revolution and proclaim a republic. 1970 – Biafra capitulated, ending the Nigerian Civil War. 1991 – Persian Gulf War: An act of the U.S. Congress authorized the use of American military force to drive Iraq out of Kuwait.  2006 – A stampede during the Stoning of the Devil ritual on the last day at the Hajj in Mina, Saudi Arabia, killed at least 362 Muslim pilgrims.  The Stoning of the Devil occurs during the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. During the ritual, Muslim pilgrims throw pebbles at three walls (formerly pillars), called  jamarāt , in the city of Mina just east of Mecca.    January 11 Events 630 - Conquest of Mecca: The Prophet Muhammad and his followers conquered Mecca.  The Quraysh surrendered. The  conquest of Mecca  was the capturing of the town of Mecca by Muslims  led by the Islamic prophet Muhammad.  The conquest marked the end of the wars between the followers of Muhammad and the Quraysh  tribe. 1946 - Enver Hoxha, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Albania, declared the People's Republic of Albania with himself as head of state. 1972 - East Pakistan renamed itself Bangladesh. 1998 - Over 100 people were killed in the Sidi-Hamed massacre in Algeria.  2013 - One French soldier and 17 militants were killed in a failed attempt to free a French hostage in Bulo Marer, Somalia.   January 8 Events 1926- Abdul-Aziz ibn Saud was crowned King of Hejaz.  Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman bin Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Saud ( 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd ar Raḥman bin Fayṣal bin Turki bin 'Abd Allah bin Muḥammad Al Sa'ud )  (b. January 15, 1875 – d. November 9, 1953), known in the West as  Ibn Saud , was the first monarch and founder of Saudi Arabia,  the "third Saudi state".    He was ruler of the whole Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from September 23, 1932 to November 9, 1953 but ruled parts of it as early as 1902. Ibn Saud reconquered his family's ancestral home city of Riyadh in 1902, starting three decades of conquests that made him the ruler of nearly all of central and north Arabia.
